The Kauai Landscaping Industry Council (KLIC) has become the second "green industry" association in Hawaii to sign the Voluntary Codes of Conduct, a national program.

The goal of the Voluntary Codes of Conduct program is to unite gardeners, landscape professionals, the nursery industry, scientists and botanical gardens with a collaborative, proactive, and educational approach toward invasive species.

The Kauai Invasive Species Committee strives to educate local nurseries about the invasive nature of certain common ornamentals, such as the Australian tree fern.

Aloha!

Welcome to the first edition of the Hawaii Invasive Species Council eNews. There are so many great projects and difficult invasive species issues we work on that we plan to highlight one topic every two weeks. The Council was created to increase coordination and improve our response to invasive species. In that spirit, our first topic is "Weeding Out Invasive Plants." Presented are a few of the diverse efforts to predict which plant species will be invasive, some efforts to prevent weeds from being introduced, and new legislation that addresses agency roles. Please let me know what you think!

SENATE BILL NO. 639

State of Hawaii 24th Legislature 2007

Invasive Species; Noxious Weeds

Prohibits the importation and sale of noxious weeds and any new plant species without department of agriculture inspection and approval. Requires the department to update the noxious weed list every two years. Appropriates funds for the revision and review of the list of noxious weeds. Senate Bill 639

Weed Risk Assessment

The Weed Risk Assessment identifies high-risk species (likely invasive plants), allowing for informed decisions that will reduce the economic and ecological harm caused by invasive plants in Hawaii and on other Pacific islands. Many introduced plants provide significant benefits to humans, and such benefits also should be considered when making planting or importation decisions. Weed Risk Assessment
