The Kauai Invasive Species Committee (KISC) has increased its focus on early detection and is employing a proactive approach to weed control. Early detection strategies, like road-side and nursery surveys, enable us to identify threats before they become widespread and out of control. By adding early detection to our toolbox, KISC has taken an aggressive step towards preventing new and destructive invasive species from establishing on Kauai. 2006 Kauai fire ant survey report (pdf) presents the results of an island-wide survey of Kauai for this biting pest. The little fire ant (Wasmannia auropunctata) was accidentally introduced to Kauai in 1999. The methodology and success of ongoing eradication and containment efforts against the little fire ant are reviewed.
Hawaii Early Detection Network
The Hawaii Early Detection Network was created to increase public awareness of invasive species and engage communities in the monitoring of their own neighborhoods. Find out how you can help protect Kauai's aina by participating in the Eyes and Ears Team and attending an educational workshop.
Kauai Early Detection Field Guide (pdf)
An informative field guide detailing the early detection list of invasive plants and animals to look for on Kauai. Receive a free Kauai Early Detection Field Guide when you attend an Early Detection workshop, contact Tiffani Keanini for more information at tkeanini@hawaii.edu.
Workshops
Join the early detection Eyes and Ears Team by attending an educational workshop. You can help keep Kauai free from high risk pests by monitoring their backyard and home areas. If you are interested in having your group or association participate in these workshops, please contact Tiffani Keanini at tkeanini@hawaii.edu or 808-821-1490.

As KISC follows up on a road side survey for invasive weeds, we need the community's help in locating possible additional populations of found threats. We will be posting links to information about each weed we are looking for. Please contact KISC at kisc@hawaiiantel.net
if you know of additional locations where these weeds have been spotted. The KISC crew will be conducting surveys to determine the extent of the populations and whether they should be added to a list for eradication.
