Kauai Invasive Species Committee (KISC)

KISC's Early Detection Program

The Kauai Invasive Species Committee (KISC) has increased its focus on early detection in 2007-2008 and is employing a proactive approach to weed control. Early detection strategies, like road-side and nursery surveys, enable us to identify threats before they become widespread and out of control. By adding early detection to our toolbox, KISC has taken an aggressive step towards preventing new and destructive invasive species from establishing on Kauai. The 2007 Kauai Roadside Survey Report discusses the methodology and results of this survey.

Where's that weed?

As KISC follows up on a road side survey for invasive weeds, we need the community's help in locating possible additional populations of found threats. We will be posting links to information about each weed we are looking for. Please contact Troy Larsen at troylarsen@hawaiiantel.net if you know of additional locations where these weeds have been spotted. The KISC crew will be conducting surveys to determine the extent of the populations and whether they should be added to a list for eradication.

Have you seen this weed?

Upcoming Workshops

As part of KISC's Early Detection Program, we will be conducting workshops with various groups across Kauai. These workshops are part of our Kia'i moku: Guarding the island program sponsored by the County of Kauai's Office of Economic Development. If you are interested in having your group or associations participate in these workshops, please contact Jackie Kozak at jkozak@hawaii.edu.
